Before & After: A jumpsuit to a cute dress!

Just like in my post about those tricky skirt-shorts almost 2 years ago, I have been tricked once again by some strange item of clothing at an op-shop. I thought the thing below was a nice long floral vintage DRESS - until I got home, tried it on, and was thoroughly confused/disappointed:
Oh boy. Not my style, sorry.

I had bought the "dress" with the intention of shortening it into a cuter dress, anyway, so I figured that the sudden appearance of pant legs would just provide an additional challenge!
Dress is DIY (restyled) | necklace is thrifted | shoes are Naot Kedma's

It was actually really easy to turn this into a dress (and yes, I filmed the entire process for anyone who is interested, it'll be on my youtube channel within a couple of days!) So now I'm actually on the lookout for weird old jumpsuits in op-shops because it turns out that they actually make really great dresses!

How is your day going?

  1. Love this. I have this old floral romper in my closet that I haven't worn for over a year. Maybe I'll turn it into a cute dress! :)

  2. You did such an awesome job transforming this jumpsuit! I can't even tell it was ever not a dress. Adorable! Also your tree necklace is awesome and I may need one like that.

  4. Excellent. I also got hold of what looked like a dress in a swap and didn't realise it was a playsuit until I got home. It is way too baggy and wide legged for that so I may just turn it into a dress using your method, thank you

  5. That print is gorgeous!
Just a suggestion but what would also look cool, if you did this again, would be to insert a godet when you open up the trouser legs, in a contrasting fabric which would also give extra volume to the dress x

    1. ahhh, awesome!! Luckily the pant legs were already so baggy that the skirt ended up pretty voluminous anyway, but I'll definitely keep that in mind if I do this with a tighter-legged jumpsuit, thank you so much!

  6. I love this! Although I would have probably worn it as a pantsuit anyway because I dig pantsuits.

  7. This is such a neat idea! And so obvious really. The amount of these weird playsuit things I've found that I thought were a dress and had to put back in disappointment, I'd never thought of simply altering them into a dress.

  8. Ahh, awesome. Why didn't I think of this? So many big old jumpsuits out there too.

  9. Your hair is growing so fast! I have your type of frizzy/wavy hair, but longer. I have been itching to get a short fringe like yours for a while! Would you mind doing a post or video on cutting and maintaining your fringe when your hair is curly? Thanks a bunch!

    1. Ohh, yeah, okay! Thanks for the video suggestion. I may! But in case I don't... definitely go to a hairdresser to cut your fringe cut in for the first time (but cut it yourself after that). The hairdresser was able to make my fringe actually existent - because I have really thin hair, haha, it was so wispy when I tried to cut it in myself.
And then I simply blowdry my fringe ONLY (to make it straight) every morning after I shower, and with the rest I let it dry naturally, and I kinda scrunch it up in my fingers a little bit while it's drying and sometimes add some "beach hair" spray :) When it's completely dried, I usually just give it a little brush!

  12. You are so talented! Seriously. You have such skills with this stuff. You inspired me to cut a dress that was too tight into a skirt and I'm still figuring out getting the zip in. :( I know, probably totally easy for you. But yeah, I have a lot of admiration for the way you make all this stuff.
Oh and that necklace is gorgeous. Kind of makes me think of the tree of Gondor. :)

  15. I am so excited to see you posting tutorials on youtube and showing us your thrifted alterations. You've inspired me to finally alter the neckline of a sweater I bought last year. =)
